This course forms a hands-on introduction to those statistical methods needed by a sensory and consumer scientist. Mainly based around the use of XLSTAT, attendees will gain practical experience using real-life examples and will be able to save their work to take away with a free copy of XLSTAT and XLSTAT-MX so they will be competent to start using their expertise from day 1 after the course. Attendees will also receive a 3 month license for Design Express - the powerful QI Statistics consumer trial design software and a number of specialised Excel spreadsheets.

ABOUT THE LECTURERS

Dr. Hal MacFie is a statistician by training, with an international reputation in the areas of product assessment and consumer research. Author of over 100 scientific publications and three books, he was Head of Consumer Science at the Institute of Food Research, Reading England, before becoming Director of the Institute. Dr. MacFie is now an independent consultant, Visiting Professor at Reading University and European Editor of Food Quality and Preference.

Anne Hasted began her career as an academic statistician at Reading University, leaving in 1989 to set up Qi Statistics Ltd offering statistical training and consultancy support to research and industry. She has wide training and consultancy experience in the food industry, particularly in the area of product improvement.

Analysis of Central Location Trials.
Tabulation and Presentation of scores and demographics data.
Hands on exercises in Excel.
Analysis of Variance, one and two way, Presentation of results, Bar charts, Use of Least Significant Differences.
Multiple Comparison tests, Penalty analysis
Hands on Exercises in Excel
Analysis of incomplete designs.
Exercises in XLSTAT and XLSTAT-MX

Designing Central Location trials:
Warm up, selection of samples, balanced designs and numbers of respondents
Hands on exercises using DESIGN EXPRESS and free QI statistics Excel spread sheet

   
14.30 - 17.30 Comparison of JAR data using chi-squared tests.
Analysis of paired preference data and CATA (check all that apply) data.
TURF analysis
Correspondence Analysis - definition, graphical explanation, use with two way tables, Multiple Correspondence Analysis, Use for analysing demographical data in Central location trials.

March 4th Day 2

9.00 - 12.30 Segmentation Strategies.
Using Cluster Analysis to identify consumer segments.
Hierarchical versus Non-hierarchical methods
Hands on Exercises using XLSTAT
Latent Class clustering - an overview of its approach and possible advantages.
Evaluating the cluster solution - discrimination, investigating relationships with demographics.
Use of Correspondence Analysis to visualise the relationships between segments and demographics.

Principal Components Analysis - definition, graphical explanation, scaling, score plots and loadings plots.
Internal preference mapping and cluster visualisation
Brand - attribute mapping

Relating Consumer and Sensory Data
Linear and quadratic regression ( Simple preference mapping)
Building simple regression models to relate liking to sensory data, linear, quadratic models.
Modelling with multivariate sensory data using PCA, vector and ideal point models
Exercises using XLSTAT External Preference Mapping.
External preference mapping using XLSTAT-MX. . Using the software to select the correct model for each segment.
Crossover Preference Mapping
Hands on exercises using XLSTAT Prefmap module.
What sensory properties will the desired product have?
