This one day workshop challenges some typical approaches to data analysis and reporting.

We start by discussing statistical significance, what it means and what it may not mean and encourage greater attention to the size of effects rather than just their statistical significance. This leads us to look at multiple comparison tests a topic of common concern.

We then consider three of the most widely used mapping techniques and compare and contrast the features they reveal in the data.

The day ends with a comparative analysis of classical and partial least squares regression and challenges the concept that complicated is always best.

There will be short practical workshops using XLSTAT and we hope to send you home with some new ideas and opinions on some widely used tools.

Statistical Significance
Looking at Analysis of Variance results. What does significance mean? Is it useful? Multiple comparison tests – when and why should you use them. Focussing on the size of the effect – confidence intervals, effect size.

Visualising Products in Multivariate Space 2
Principal Component Analysis -graphical explanation. Interpretation of maps. Overlaying related data using supplementary variables. Rotating factors for improved interpretation.
Correspondence Analysis – What does it do? When is it useful? When can it give misleading results – suggestions of alternative approaches.

Visualising Products in Multivariate Space2
Canonical Variates – a less common approach but valuable if you want to visualise sensory panel or consumer cluster data allowing for variation in the mean scores. Comparison with PCA

Partial Least Squares
The method explained together with model fitting strategies. Are complex models always best? How to quantify what is best. Case study on modelling consumer acceptability using PLS and ordinary regression
