This one-day workshop gives you the opportunity to consider issues that we are sure you worry about from time to time in your everyday analysis of consumer and sensory test data. Our key tool is Analysis of Variance but this technique makes assumptions about the underlying distributions in our data – what are these assumptions and do they matter? We will cover repeated measures analysis, when and how it should be used and look at simple nested models..

We will also discuss the over reliance on statistical significance in reporting data, the relevance (or not) of multiple comparison tests and alternative approaches using randomisation tests.

The day will be carried out using the ANOVA functionality in XLSTAT

Anne Hasted began her career as an academic statistician at Reading University, she is now the senior consultant at Qi Statistics Ltd offering statistical training, software and consultancy support to research and industry. She has wide training and consultancy experience in both sensory and consumer research and has an international reputation for “user friendly” training.

Review of the basics. Means – Standard Error- confidence intervals. Central Limit theorem. Statistical significance – what does it tell you – what does it not tell you. Dangers and alternatives.

Analysis of Variance of unreplicated consumer tests. Monadic and sequential monadic analysis. Model parameterisation. Incomplete designs, different sums of squares (type I, II III), LSMEANS

Assumptions we make in the analysis.
Normality, Homogeneity.
How “bad” can my data be before I have to worry
Analysing JAR, 3point and binary data.
Tests for normality – are they relevant?

Multiple comparison tests, family error rate and false discovery rate.

Fitting Mixed Models – classical ANOVA approach v  REML. Which residuals to examine for replicated tests(benefit of central limit theorem)

Repeated Measures ANOVA –traditional approach of significance adjustment v modern approach of modelling error structure

Fitting Nested models

Alternative Testing Approaches. Randomisation tests, Bootstrapping
